I still can't believe it was August of 2008 when I last posted to this blog.

Some of the easier tasks I did early on as I was still very motivated to get them done right after creating the list. Others just happened by chance.

When I asked Dalyn how I could become a better writer, she said "Write." There was a whole conversation that followed, but that's the first step. So here I am writing.

I also got asked recently by a local blogger if I'd like to write for his blog. While I really do have a lot on my plate to be taking on new projects, the thought that someone out there wants me to put words together and post them for the world to see for his project sort of blows my mind. And my ego a little bit, I'll admit.

So, in the interest of bettering my writing, keeping people up to date, and getting number 23 over with, here's the first in what I hope will be at least 30 posts in a row.

Of course, when I last posted, I didn't even know about this guy, so looking back at my list, some of the things seem a little superficial or selfish. I know that if I made a new list today, it would look completely different.

boulder bikes

i've started blogging about bikes in and around boulder.

i've got a ton of ideas of what to put on there, what it'll look like (i promise it won't be grey text on black for too much longer...), where it'll go, and all that.

i've found it's easier to post bike stuff than personal stuff...even though a lot of times there's enough overlap that they're the same things. i guess if it involves bicycles, then it's easier for me to believe that someone else might be interested.

i'm pretty sure i can post at least one thing per day for 30 days about bikes in boulder. that might be the first thing on my list to go away. i'm not sure how i feel about that.

i did find my car paperwork, i need to take care of that, as well. one of these (next 980 something) days...

another list.

the goal:

create a list of 1000 hit 80's songs.
1. compile those songs on an actual playlist.
2. stop worrying about finding more 80's songs.

the rules:
1. song must have been released between 1/1/80 and 12/31/89.
2. it doesn't matter if the song charted, just that it's an awesome song.

this list is totally a work in progress. i got some friends to help with this list, so some of the songs and artists don't match up. also, some of the songs don't fit rule number 2.
i posted the list and started the project on myspace, and solicited suggestions from friends. the bottom of the list is out of alphabetical order, and there's some doubles. i'll get those taken care of. not including tv shows, i think the total number right now is around 680.
i'd like to get the list into a spreadsheet, so i can sort them easier, and keep the list a little more organized. once i hit 1000 songs, i'll start figuring out which songs i already have, and which i don't, and start hunting those i don't...

10,000 Maniacs Trouble Me
A Flock of Seagulls I Ran
A Ha Take on Me
Abba Take a Chance on Me
ABC Be Near Me
AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long
Adam and the Ant Goody Two Shoes
Aerosmith/Run DMC Walk This Way
After The Fire Der Kommisar
Al B Sure Night And Day

Alice Cooper Poison
Alphaville Big In Japan
Animotion Obsession
Ashford & (there's also a timer, which tells me how long i've been on the bike--in motion-- a>since the last trip reset as well as overall. these two features i rarely use for some reason.)
this morning, about 1/3 of a mile from work, my overall odometer passed 3,000 miles. 3,000 miles. three thousand miles. we moved to lafayette in february, and i remember fondly passing the 1,000 mile mark that week. that's about one thousand miles in 12 months, give or take--ok, just take-- three months. then, about 3 months later, the odometer turned over to 2,000 miles. in three months, i had done as much riding as the previous 9 months. now, 3 months later, i've done the same again.
i told thedalyn this exciting news, (what's the exciting news, you ask? that i rolled the odometer over to 3000 miles today. try to keep up, dear readers,) and her response was "we live farther away now." awesome. way to join in the excitement.

something else that struck me today, as i was riding in to work, watching the counter get closer and closer to 3 with 3 zeros behind it, is that 3,000 is not really all that different than 3,001 or 2,999. is mile number 24 any more special than mile number 3,564,852?. for some reason, we put some kind of mystical weight on "round" numbers. the only thing i could think of is that it's special because of it's place on a number line.
there was a time when odometers and counters and things were analog, with little wheels with printed numbers that turned with gears, etc, where the 10's wheel turned once for every ten rotations of the 1's wheel, the hundred's for every ten turns of the 10's wheel. when these types of odometers would get to a round number like 3,000, that one mile from 2,999 to 3,000 is pretty much like all the others, but as that ones wheel turns into place once more, it drags with it 3 other wheels this time, something that only happens every 1,000 revolution.
i can only imagine in 21 months, when the computer's "gears" roll over to 10,000 miles. will i be 10 times as excited? probably not. but it will be cool to see all those numbers roll over to zero as a new column is introduced.

i'm not sure what the point of all this is, other than maybe a poorly disguised way for me to brag to the world that i've ridden that bike the distance from lafayette, colorado to north pole, alaska in about 18 months. not that it would take me 18 months to do that if i was traveling to north pole alaska, since i'm averaging about 7.8 miles per day at this rate. if i was going to ride my bike to alaska, hopefully i'm going to put more miles behind me than 8 per day.

what have i learned in all those hours on my bike (233 hours and 51 minutes to be exact?

a new seat would be nice.

can't ride a bike wha???

those of you who know me know that i teach _a bike class for kids. those of you who don't know me now know the same. most of what we cover in this class is mechanics. the kids actually earn a bike that they keep through the program. we also try to get in some riding skills if there's time at the end of the class.
today was the last class in the july session, so the kids finished up their bikes, safety checked them, and we went for a short ride. two of the students (sisters, as it turns out) weren't comfortable enough on two wheels without training wheels to be able to join the group ride, so i stayed with them and worked on some balance exercises. i even discovered a new and easy practice method for getting used to the pedals*.
i wish i had known earlier that they couldn't ride. i would have spent more of their class time working on balance and riding skills and less on things like how to replace and adjust a derailleur cable. these two kids were some of our best mechanics that we've seen. they had a sense of wanting to figure out challenges and bike parts that i haven't seen in too many of our students.
we had to replace some reflectors, and i asked why we put the red on the back of the bike, and the white one on the front. the younger sister figured out in about 3 seconds what the reason is. blew my socks off. i think there are adults in the bike shop who don't know why we do that. in fact, i know there are, as i've seen countless bikes with the wrong reflector on the wrong end of the bike. this girl is 9.
the girls' mother did bring up the fact that one of them still uses one training wheel at home, so perhaps i was being overly optimistic about their riding abilities. i guess the family's moved a fair bit in the last year or two, so the kids haven't had a regular place to ride, nor bikes to get used to. it's hard for me to understand a kid's world that doesn't include riding a bike. we moved around a lot when i was a kid, and one of the first things we did in our new destination was to go for bike rides and figure out the neighborhood.

i realized the other day that i can't remember a time in my life when i couldn't ride a bike. i have vague memories of my dad running behind me saying "you got it! you got it! keep going!" but i can't be sure i'm not just stealing that memory from some movie or tv show. i'm kind of glad that i can't remember not riding a bike. i don't know how i would handle a memory like that.

at the end of the class, after bikes were put into parents's cars, tools were put away, the floor swept, i turned around at one point, and there were these two girls. waiting to tell me thanks.
totally made my night. even if they didn't get up on two wheels earlier...

*2 exercises for learning to ride a bike:

1. "the seat scoot"

lower the seat so that the rider can sit comfortable on the bike with both feet flat on the ground. have the rider sit on the bike, as if they're going to ride it. the rider pushes with their feet along the ground, moving forward as if they're riding a bike with no pedals, like this:

start with small steps. the rider will get more comfortable with lifting her feet up, steering, braking, etc, and her steps will get longer. eventually, she'll be able to zip around, coasting with her feet up off the ground, only putting their feet down to avoid crashing.

2. "the pedal pusher"
this method works well for kids who have ridden a skateboard or scooter before. it's a little more advanced that the seat scoot, but kids learn in different ways, and if they're motivated to learn, then mixing up the lessons will help break the monotony, and encourage success.

have the rider stand over the bike as if he's about to go for a ride. hands on handlebars, feet on ground beside the bike. lift one foot up onto a pedal while keeping the other foot on the ground. the rider's weight will eventually be on the pedal, but the other foot is busy pushing off the ground. similar to a razor type scooter, or a skateboard. essentially, with one foot on the pedal, and the other pushing off the ground, the rider has turned their pedal bicycle into one of these:

for this method, the rider will be propelling himself forward, but his weight will be on the pedal, so he'll be standing up as he's pushing along. again, helps with the balance, steering, etc.

eventually, the foot that's on the pedal will swing back and forth slightly. as it moves forward, it's freewheeling. as it moves back, it will be engaging the chain, and is, for all intents and purposes, pedalling. it's an eay victory for the rider to be pedalling so easily, and the smile i got when i pointed out that she was actually pedalling made my night.

the list.

The Mission:

Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. once. i'm glad i have 1001 days to do it in. making up the list was a several hours long project in and of itself, and i had to go to the internet to visit some other folks' lists to get ideas. there's a ton of people doing this thing, and it's interesting to read what other people put on their list.
i was thinking about just how much stuff i have on this list. it's a big damn list. some of the things (number 55, anyone?) are a little unnerving, and i'm not sure how i'll pull them off. if i didn't have to work, eat, sleep, spend time with dalyn, i wonder how long ticking all 100 of these things off would take. i'm starting the project on 7/31/08, and my end date is April 28, 2011. that seems like so far from now.
if i think back to 1001 days ago, and what i was doing then, it seems like so long ago. i was still running the babysitting business, delivering bread for the bakery. i'm not sure how this list would look different if the me from november, 2005 had written it. that's a really weird thing to think about...
one thing that did occur to me is that this will be a great list to go back to on weekends or evenings, when we're sitting around with nothing to do, and looking for something to entertain us. hopefully we won't burn out and lose interest once the fun/easy things are completed.

101 things in 1001 days

yesterday thedalyn brought up an idea that she saw online. make a list of 101 things that you'd like to accomplish, and do those things within 1001 days of starting. this basically amounts to 3 years. or one thing on your list every 10 days. numerous people have done this already, and i'm guessing there's all kinds of books and planners and things to buy. of course, these things will help you make your list, and may help organize and prioritize the things on it, but it won't get them done. that's sort of the point of the list in the first place, i think.
anyway, i'm still compiling my list. i'll post it here as soon as it's done. number 23 on the list is blog for 30 days in a row. i created this blog ages ago, (just looked it up, and apparently i created it in 2005) with the hopes of actually doing some regular writing, keeping friends and family up to date with what's going on in my world, finding other like minded folks, etc. as you can tell from the fact that this is the first post, that never really happened. until now.
some of the things on the list are things that i would like to do repeatedly for a finite amount of time. (number 43 is cook dinner for 30 days in a row.) some are big, one time things. (number 1, sell the car.) some are things i will have to work towards, and eventually achieve (numbers 34 and 36, learn flash, and create a flash game.) some are things i'll need to do repeatedly, in the hopes of making them a habit (number 23, blog once a day for 30 days.)

thedalyn is waiting until august 1st to start her list, officially. i figured i'd get started now, so as not to let her get ahead. she's sneaky that way. actually, i've been trying to figure out a way to get this blog rolling, and waiting for an appropriate time/threshold/some defining moment that gets me writing. i tend to put big behavioral changes off until i have some big reason to change. you know, cos blogging is...um...this big behavioral change... i guess i just have delusions of grandeur, and want to make this a regular thing in the hopes of making my writing better, getting ideas onto paper, so to speak, and just plain old edification.

no more putting off. it's time for some edification.

hopefully i'll have the list finished soon, and will post it when i do.

josh.

My boyfriend’s pecker is too big for my mouth

Virgins always hee-hawed at me and even fellows did in the federal toilet!
Well, now I smil at them, because I took M_E GA D IK
for 3 months and now my tool is indeed more than average.
pay forhttp://hlwcn.com/
--------------------------
Malone also scored for the Penguins. i remember thinking it was a trick question or something, cos pac man doesn't eat apples, he eats power pellets.
anyway, we're about to go to my new classroom and meet my teacher and classmates. this counselor lady reads my full name, joshua matthew brown, and asks if there's a shorter version i go by, like josh, or matthew, or matt...so without thinking, i answer 'matt'. i still dunno why. i think i just wanted to see what would happen. for the record, up to htis point i'd always gone by joshua. josh came later, but my parents still call me joshua. it used to bug me that they had a different, more formal name for me, but i've kinda realized that it seems like they have a special name reserved for their use only, and i like it.
so we get to class, and i'm introduced as matt. to me this is insane, cos my name's not matt, it's joshua. i find it more amusing than anything else. i felt like i had pulled one over on the teacher and students. of course, to them, there's nothing out of line. so they call me matt, and matthew.
everything's normal for awhile, and then parent/teacher conference night rolls around. my mom and dad go in, i can't remember if i was with them or not, i like to think that i was there, cos i sort of remember this happening. the teacher sat us all down, and informed my parents that (in the same evaluation that would follow me thru high school) "matthew does great in my class, but he's disruptive and is not fulfilling his potential..." my parents look at me and each other, and are like "matthew? our son's name is joshua."
so there i am in the middle of this, having not explained to my parents that i was going by matt at school, and joshua at home. they asked if i preferred matt, and if i wanted them to call me this. i felt like a deer in the headlights. i dind't know what they wanted me to say, so i capitulated, and said, "joshua is good. you can call me that." i remember feeling like i had to decide between my parents and my teachers. of course my parents took that one.
so the next week, all the teachers started calling me joshua, but none of the students knew who joshua was. they knew me as matt.
it kinda ironed itself out after a while, but it was kinda dicey for a minute there in that parent teacher conference.

my "new" bike

so, i have this place where i get bikes from. they're basically bikes that people have thrown away to be recycled as scrap metal. i've gotten kid's bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, bmx bikes, a sweet ass old schwinn bike(think the little red bike most every 8 yr old got for christmas in 1965), and some weird ones, like a bmw olympic team frame, which is a mtn bike, but the frame folds in half. bizarre.
anyway in order to score the bikes for free, they have to be liberated at night, or when the place is closed, so that no employees will be around. it's sort of semi quasi legal to take stuff from this place, but prolly not a good idea to be seen doing it, nonetheless.
anyway, last night, i go to check it out. what to my wandering eyes does appear? a little kids bike. 12 inch wheels, pink girl's frame, and a rack on the back wheel. like for panniers or something. as if the 4 year old riding this is going on a cross country ride and needs saddlebags.
i'm wearing flipflops, by the way, and wasn't counting on actually getting in the dumpster, but i couldn't resist this pink perfect minibike. so i climbed in.
as i'm going for broke to liberate this sweet little bike, i spot some more bike parts. a 20" bmx wheel, with peg still attached. so i toss that out of the dumpster, into my pile of "scrap" metal to be liberated.
as i'm maneuvering closer to the wheel, i see a frame and fork. it's pretty beefy, and i guess(correctly) that it;'s a bmx frame. at the time, it was being suffocated by a discarded stove. i had to wrestle witht he stove while balanced on some other sort of scrap metal, which seemed to be solid enough for me to brace against while i manhandled this dead stove out of the way.
i finally get the schwinn "pro track 3" as it's known free from the clutches of the stove and the random chain link fence scraps, and it's complete. someone tossed it. keep in mind that at the time, i didn't know what kind of bike it was. i jus knew it was beefy as hell, solid, had some killer parts, 3 pc cranks, and had to be a hefty bmx frame, worth a little bit of climbing gear at least.
so, i looked and looked online, and finally found a picture of this bike, and a description and nailed it as the pro stock 3 that it is.
the good news? it's a 300 dollar bike.
the bad news which actually might turn out to be good news? it was recalled later in 1999, due to some faulty welds or something. so this means that while i can't sell it (morally most of all, i don't have the heart to sell a recalled product to some unaware schmoe, but prolly legally there's somethign wrong with that as well, especially since i now know about the recall.
i find out tomorrow if i can still exchange it for a new replacement one, as provided by the terms of the recall.
moral of the story? i may have gotten a new bike from the dumpster.

update #1: i called schwinn, and the recall occured prior to their having declared bankruptcy, so i'm sol as far as getting a replacement frame. the guy i spoke to was funny, cos i kept saying "so, i'm basically out of luck? i have a bike i can't sell, and can't ride?" and his response was "well, sir, i have to be very careful about my language here. the schwinn corporate response is that you should not ride that bike." and then i finally got him to say that if a bike shop checks out the welds, it's prolly ok, but "having said that, it in no way is an endorsement by schwinn that it's ok to ride the bike..." and that's how i left it.

update #2: early on in this adventure, i posted a message on a schwinn bmx forum looking for hte model name, any info on it, etc and got no helpful response. after having spoken to schwinn, i posted again about how i thought it was a pro stock 3, which had been recalled, (have you not been reading so far?) and that i'm out of luck. so after having posted that message, someone else posted with some new, better news. i don't have apro stock 3. i have a pro stock 1. which was a> not recalled. and b> almost 700 dollars new. holy crap! score. the person who posted(keep in mind the almost ocd like behavior of those who post in these types of forums, being able to discern the model name of a bike based on aserial number, an obscure description of some feature of the frame, etc...) said that the only olive and chrome and black model was the pro stock 1. so it's what i have. i'm so stoked.

too bad my lock is not worthy of a 700 dollar freebike.

now, to sell or not to sell? the pragmatic dumpster diver 28 1/2 year old in me says to sell it and buy some climbing gea---pay down some debt. the 14 year old bmx dork in me says to keep it, even tho i know i'm not capable/worthy of such a sweet ride.

we'll see. i may shop it around and see what i can get for it.

update over 3 years later:

turns out i ended up keeping the bike for awhile, and it just took up space in the garage. i posted it on craiglist, and tried to play up the bmx awesomeness of the bike. the only interest i got was from some guy who sounded super excited on the phone, and then came over and asked if it would be a good bike to ride to bars.
sold it for 100 bucks.
that was about 2 years ago. i completely forgot about this bike.

stupid phone

i had a dream about her last night.
we were doing something we hadn't done.
it reminded me of the way people are reminded of other people.
then the phone woke me up.
it wasn't her.

trash and junk

i have too many bikes. why is it that i keep bringing them home? lord i hope not. i think it hit a little too close to home, in that i was about two social ladder steps away from (i hesitate to use the word "above") that kid.
i also watched cinemania, and that one made me feel better about myself. altho i could see myself in some of those people. not myself now, but myself if i had not chosen some of the things in my life that i have. not so much that i would turn into one of those people, but i remember the compulsive need when going to a show to purchase one of each piece of merch from whatever crappy band i had just seen.
and i played on the internet.

Comments:

i sent josh said movies. i feel less stupider knowing he's more informed about teh current generations ("gen y" aka the "entitlement generation") obsessions, keeps him in step with the kids, the spooky kooks, the hot topic pukes... although it's entirely unnessessary from a certain POV, yet from another it's mildy, mutedly fun to know where people who are the age we were ten years ago stand on crap. youth culture wise. i loved ND. it represents the late 80's/early 90's mentality i was exposed to living around rural hicks in michigan (you heard me right, MI. SO many hicks. bingo ringo.) the director of that movie is apparently my age and culled from his own life experences to create the characters and situations in the movie, things i related to instantly... so why does josh wonder if the current crop of mop tops will see ND as their "saint elmos fire"? "better off dead" wasn't a nostalgic movie at teh time it was made. and although it didnt overly rely on thses factors, it certainly featured all current (for then) actors, music, pop culture references and most importantly, slang. ND goes out of its way to be dated. which is easily when a film takes place in a rural setting where the cosmo trappings of worldly. ... ...

Posted by carl on Jul 9, 2005 12:31 PM
[Remove] [Reply to this]

....urbanites makes less of a mark on the cultural landscape of the people, thusly giving the i have lost track of what i was talking about. josh and i made a noise record together.

Posted by carl on Jul 9, 2005 12:36 PM
[Remove] [Reply to this]
